The Ontario Bar Association (OBA) has plans to launch a continuing professional development series dedicated to “the mindful lawyer.” This decision to focus on mental health came not long after the Bar’s president, Orlando Da Silva, spoke publicly about his own struggles with depression.
According to De Silva, the conversation uncovered a need larger than anticipated. “By putting it front and centre, we want to take the spotlight off of the stigma and reduce its significance in the discussion, just normalize the discussion,” says De Silva.
In addition to the series, the OBA will be providing a “mental-health brief” with advice on how to handle triggers lawyers may come up against that can lead to mental health issues.
